IMPORTANT IMMIGRATION UPDATE RE: LEGAL SPONSORSHIP

News:

This week, the Trump Administration announced that it will begin cracking down on American citizens who sponsor immigrants that become a strain on the U.S. welfare system.

Under the administration’s new policies, state agencies must provide the names of immigrants receiving public benefits to the federal government. The Treasury Department will then bill the immigrants’ sponsors. If the bill is not paid, the department will withhold the amount from the sponsor’s tax returns.


What This Means If You Are a Permanent Resident With a Sponsor:

If you are a legal permanent residents receiving benefits, you should begin the process to become a United States citizen as soon as possible. If you do not, your sponsor will receive a bill for the cost of the benefits you are receiving. If the bill is not paid, the department will withhold the amount from the sponsor’s tax returns.


What This Means If You Are Sponsoring a Permanent Resident:

If you are sponsoring a legal permanent residents receiving benefits, you should speak to them about beginning the process to become a United States citizen as soon as possible. If they do not and continue to receive benefits, you will receive a bill for the cost of the benefits they are receiving. If the bill is not paid, the department will withhold the amount from your tax returns.
